Values are what matters most to our group, what we truly believe in. From these values/beliefs come behaviours, which make us who we are. In the ideal business context, every person consistently displays the behaviours that match the values, has the authority to demand such behaviours from anyone and everyone in the group and is able to instantly recall the values.
In our personal lives—as a parent, spouse, sibling or friend—our values are identical and they may be reflected by other behaviours.
It is the leader’s first and most important role–to articulate, model and teach the business values.
Values exist in every business context–the key leadership challenge is to have all stakeholders in alignment.
Commitment
This becomes evident when we set clear goals and follow a plan to achieve them, understand that we have responsibilities, rather than a role or a job, we exercise self-discipline to keep our commitments, we hold ourselves and others accountable for all commitments made and we strive to make the best of what we have.
Curiosity
We seek to learn from every positive and negative experience, we make time for reflection in the hope that we may learn, we treat change as the inevitable outcome of poor performance or a better idea, we seek continuous improvement in all that we do and we seek to broaden our options before making a choice.
Humility
We see that we always have something to learn, we are open to being challenged by anyone, we never take ourselves too seriously, we do not make acts of giving conditional on receiving and we don’t allow success to make us complacent or arrogant.
Integrity
We tell the truth as we see it, we tell someone that their behaviour bothers us, rather than keep quiet or tell others first, we speak up for our values rather than remain silent, we represent ourselves and our capabilities honestly and we acknowledge and learn from our competitors’ strengths.
Enjoyment
We constantly strive to achieve peak health and fitness, we take responsibility for our own happiness, we seek to balance time and energy spent on work, family and social activities. We also take the optimistic view while still managing risks and we celebrate our own success and recognise others’.
Fairness
We support others regardless of race, gender, age, class, religion or politics. Also, we seek to overcome conflict by focusing on the process, rather than the person, we build on our natural gifts and do not expect a “free ride”, we speak up about an injustice rather than supporting it by remaining silent and we are open to challenge on our own values.
ResultsWise has developed a matrix of 60 indicative behaviours for the above values and out of this a self-assessment survey. This tool plays an important role in the quest for aligned values and behaviours.
