There are many things that the leader can concentrate on, but unless a rigour is brought to bear, there is a risk of overload, resulting in inefficiency, frustration, poor decision-making and ultimate loss of direction and control.
Here are my top five:
Set the Standard
Articulate the values and required behaviours while acting with humility and a calm determination, relying on inspired standards, not inspiring charisma, to motivate. It also about working diligently over the long-term to produce sustained results as well as mirroring the highest standards of personal preparation.
Set the Strategy
Have a clear strategic methodology and plan (see “Argenti” on this website). This includes determining the purpose of the business, how to measure the return to beneficiaries, setting pricing, margins and ambitious financial targets and settling on a maximum of six most significant drivers for success—then relentlessly pursuing them.
Set the Structure
Select the best physical location and appearance of the business, determine benefits and measurements for all employees, the working conditions and the best processes for recruitment, retention and succession. Also set a slim and flexible hierarchy to draw responsibility and accountability from every person in the organisation.
Engage the Staff
Do what you say will do, know everyone and greet them by name. Be vulnerable, but not weak. Always speak positively. Show compassion and be fair—regardless of gender, age, race, religion, politics or class. Direct improvement efforts towards peoples’ mastery and autonomy. Develop and inspire your leadership team.
Engage the Customers
Know who your external customers are by segment and by value, what they want and what you and your people must do to deliver. Use market intelligence to create solutions to unknown customer needs. Have regular personal contact with your leading customers. Deliver to customers beyond what they have paid for.
ResultsWise has developed a matrix of 50 indicative behaviours for the above priorities and out of this a self-assessment survey. This tool plays an important role in the leader’s quest for clarity of thought and action.
